Mawlamyine, March (29)

In some gold shops in Mawlamyine, the Pyu Saw Htee groups under the Military Council are threatening to extort money by sending threatening letters in the guise of PDFs, according to people close to the gold shop owners who were asked for money.

Some Pyu Saw Htee groups have been asking for money by sending a bullet and a letter, while some gold shops have received such messages via Viber and Messenger.

They are threatening to pay 15 million kyats from each gold shop and if not, they will retaliate against businesses and family members.

The gold shop owners reported the incidents to the police; the police investigated and found that it was Pyu Saw Htee, and told the shop owners to remain silent, a source close to the gold shop owners said.

The Pyu Saw Htee groups, formed by USDP members, including veterans, are supporters of the military and they are provided with weapons.

Pyu Saw Htee groups launched a series of attacks on NLD’s offices in Kyaikto, Belin, Chaungsone and Thaton townships in Mon State. They also left threatening notes on doors and bombed NLD supporters’ homes.
