Mawlamyine, March (23)
In Mon State, women’s participation in all sectors, except for the revolution, has dropped by more than half since the military coup, according to women’s rights activists.
As in the past, women are no longer allowed to participate in all sectors of development other than the revolution and participation in various social sectors, including health, is declining.
Currently, women’s participation in development projects is almost two-thirds lower than before, a women’s rights activist said.
“Currently, the role of women is being severely undermined by political change. After the coup, we are no longer as active as we used to be, either in terms of employment opportunities or participation. The role of women is now two-thirds lower than before,” she added.
With more than a year after the military coup, there is no legal protection for violence against women, oppression and sexual assault. They are also losing the basic rights they deserve.
Due to the declining role of women’s participation, almost all rights, including women’s rights to freedom of expression and association, could be lost in the long run.
Although women’s participation in various sectors of development has declined, they have deeply involved in revolution against the military dictatorship.
