Myawaddy, March (19)

The Thai government has allowed Myanmar migrant workers under MOU system to stay an additional 2 years, said the agency who assists the migrant workers.

The Thai government has extended the two-year residency permit for workers recruited under the MOU system which will expire soon.
The government has allowed more than 100 000 migrant workers to stay, most of them are Myanmar.

U Aung Kyaw, an adviser to the Migrant Workers Rights Network (MWRN) said that the extension would be of great benefit to workers.

It was done because many workers have difficulty returning home due to the COVID-19 and border closure.

Thailand plans to recruit Myanmar migrant workers under MOU due to labor shortages in the country and the recruitment plan is set to begin in April.

Currently, Burmese migrant workers are being arrested almost daily for crossing the border illegally into Thailand.
