China has suspended the import of seven kinds of goods, including rice, through Kyin San Kyawt Gate, a major gateway to China-Myanmar border trade, according to the traders.
China officially announced on March 15 that they had suspended those items due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Among the items that have been suspended are rice, broken rice, green pepper, frozen food, seafood, daily necessities, and easy-to-pack meals.
An official from the Myanmar Rice Federation said the suspension would make it more difficult for greens exporters.
He said, “It could be a problem for vegetables and fruits. Another point is the surge in infections in China in recent days. They have practiced a “Zero COVID policy, so I think there may be a problem at the border right now. It will be more difficult for fruits rather than rice.”
Under the existing laws, the import has been banned to prevent the spread of COVID-19, according to Chinese authorities.
Although China reopened Kyin San Kyawt border trade gate on March 12, now imports have been restricted again.
China mainly exports electrical appliances and fertilisers to Myanmar, and Myanmar mainly exports agricultural products to China.
