The US’s announcement that Myanmar military has committed genocide against Rohingya means calling for an international trial, the political analysts say.
The US government officially declared on March 21 that the coup junta had committed genocide against the Rohingya in Myanmar.
In 2017, the violence against Rohingya by junta military amounted to genocide and crimes against humanity, the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken said in the statement.
A politician commented that the announcement could lead to an international lawsuit.
“The international community is trying to strengthen the case. The court, as you know, can sue if the evidences are strong. A country like the United States recognizes this as genocide because of the evidences they have,” he said.
According to Blinken, this is the eighth instance of genocide committed since the Holocaust.
Apart from the Rohingya case, it is important to take into consideration of the massacre, rape and other atrocities committed by the Myanmar military on minority groups for decades, he said.
A political analyst said because of the US’s declaration, the Myanmar military has found it difficult to move freely and could continue to grab power to prevent arrests.
“As far as we know, they committed that genocide. Nothing will happen if the people ,who have committed war crimes, do not lose their power or if they do not become losers in the country where they did. If the accused lose, they will be arrested.
If the next government is close to the United States and the West, they will be arrested and prosecuted. I do not know if the announcement is pushing the current generals not to relinquish power,” he commented.
In 2017, the military committed a massacre of Rohingya during the clearance operations in Rakhine State and tens of thousands of Rohingya have fled their homes and taken refuge in neighboring Bangladesh.
Therefore, in 2020, the Gambia filed a lawsuit against Myanmar on charges of genocide at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands.
The National Unity Government (NUG) issued a statement on March 22, in which they welcomed the US’s condemnation on Myanmar genocide.
