Mawlamying, March (18)

On the morning of March 17, the fighting broke out between the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and the military council near the artillery regiment in Belin, Mon State, the locals said.

The clash took place after the military convoy was hit by landmines set up by the KNLA Brigade 1 and the PDF joint forces, and they exchanged fire.

The details of the situation on the ground are still unknown following the exchange of fire, according to a KNU Brigade 1, Thaton District official.

The fighting left hundreds of vehicles stranded on the Mawlamyine-Yangon highway and it reopened at around 2 pm, the locals said.

There have been frequent clashes between the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and the military council in KNU Brigade 1’s controlled areas- Kyaikto, Belin, Thaton and Hpa-an townships.
